Codes for Digital Recorders

ABSTRACT

This paper reviews the theory and application of constrained modulation codes, particularly as used in digital data recording applications. In keeping with the theme of this special issue, we will highlight the pioneering contributions to this area made by Shannon in his landmark 1948 paper, the evolution and progress made during the subsequent 50 years, and the critical role played by these codes in todays world of electronics. Open problems and possible future directions are also addressed. We will also touch upon some of Shannon's comments about cross-word puzzles that are relevant to coding for exploratory multi-dimensional storage technologies such as holographic recording.

Key Words: digital recorders, constrained code, recording code, run-length-limited, survey
